AGHAM / Computer Professionals Union / National Institute of Physics, College of Science, University of the Philippines Diliman

“No Computer is secure” Dr. Tapang warns the delegates to the Y4IT 2008. Since many people today keep their data in digital form in mediums, such as, hard drives, flash disks and the likes, people are more vulnerable to attacks on data and privacy, since information is stored on how devices are used. Computer Forensics is the discovery, preservation and analysis and presentation of electronic evidence. It is similar to data recovery, but has more legal implications. In computer forensics, we look for files, folders, applications, log files and file system artifacts in hard drives, removable media, network, memory, network hardware and archival media and recovering them. We use techniques in computer forensics in order to protect our information.

Companies from all around the world are now looking for new, competent professionals to develop new technologies in a new and increasingly global supply chain. PhilNITS help potential IT professionals with this by offering two certifications: Fundamental IT Engineer Exam (a generic certification that evaluates knowledge and competence on the fundamentals of computer science and information technology) and Software Design and Development Exam.

The PhilNITS Certification is accepted in Japan, which means that holders of these certification will get preferential treatment in job applications in Japanese companies and priority in availing training scholarships. In the next few years, Japan will need 60,000 new IT professionals, worth some JPY 257 million. A PhilNITS Certification will open doors for information technology professionals to career development.

Ruby is a general purpose object-oriented language originated by Japan in the 1990s. It is free software, released under the GNU GPL. Ruby on Rails, in the meantime is a full-stack framework to develop database-backed web applications. It has a “model-view-controller” architecture, and has an encoded web server, “WEBrick”. The Rails has been shipped with OS X Leopard, and is very-well supported across platforms.

The Morph Application Platform makes working with Ruby much simpler. It allows you to make applications for the web, Facebook, and even hybrid programs for the iPhone. It allows developers to make web apps like scrapbooking, social networking and online GTDs among others.

It was an unusual day at the UP Theater and UP FIlm Institute. It
was jam packed with student delegates from all over the Philippines for
the first day of the Philippine Youth Congress for Information Technology or Y4IT. Delegates overflowed some delegates from the Theater to the Film Institute.

Sen. Kiko Pangilinan was the keynote speaker for the day. He talked about his IT
experiences connected with his personal life and his kids being good at
IT and gadgets.

Mikaela Irene Fudolig, the youngest summa cum laude graduate of BS Physics, enumerated some problems with Linux in a consumer’s point of view. Linux is an open source and it’s free, so anyone can avail it but people still prefer commercialized software such as Windows. The latter is much simpler than the open sources which are too complicated for a non-IT enthusiast and/or professional. Linux must be easier to use, to understand, and more convenient so that everybody could adapt and apppreciate linux just as they do at Windows.

Followed by Ms. Fudolig’s talk was Prof. Rommel Feria’s talk about the
future of operating systems such as Linux, Mac, Windows, Solaris, etc.
The talk was somehow an almost reply and related to Ms. Fudolig’s discussion on
Linux.

Mr. Winston Damarillo, Managing Director of Global
Gateway Ventures, talked about software as service (or SaaS), a
software deployment model.  Securing venture capital funding for
enterprise 2.0 startups was discussed by Atty Denny Roja, Managing
Partner and General Counsel of Acuity Ventures. The last talk for the
day was from Mr. Lawrence Decamora on Java Certifications.

Though it rained hard in the afternoon, the first day was still fine.
Delegates interacted with the games and intermission numbers and
participated well in the open forums. Till tomorrow IT enthusiasts! )
